What is Search Engine Optimization?
The answer to the question “What is SEO” can be quite complex sometimes but it can also end up being very simple. We chose the second approach in order to explain what Search Engine Optimization is and what it does, and below we analyze it in simple words.
SEO explained in a few words
Search Engine Optimization does have a short form which is SEO and it is widely used all over the internet and worldwide. Moving on to what SEO is, it is the process of optimizing a website in order to rank it higher, when presenting search results through search engines.
The easiest way to find a website is through the different search engines (for example Google, Bing, Safari), and by using specific keywords or phrases. These can be the name of a company (eg Samsung), the category of services (eg phone repairs), a specific product, (for example phone model), etc.
The results that search engines give us, range from a few thousand to many millions of web pages related to the keyword or phrase we used in our search bar.
How do keywords work?
It is more sensible, that the keyword “pharmacy” will give much more results than the keyword “pharmacy in Athens”. Why? Because keywords and phrases are showing from general towards more specific. If you wish to get thousands and even millions of results, type a general phrase if not, customize your search and make it more specific.
The results are presented in pages (per 10 results) and the user usually reads the first, second or the third page, choosing to visit the website of a web design company located in one of them. So the “pharmacy” company or pharmacy-related result that is presented within the first 1-30 results receives much more visitors than another that is presented in the following pages.
Remember that if you can not find what you are looking for, change a word or two and try again.
Test if you need SEO or not
The truth is that due to the impact of technology, many companies would not be as known as they are today wothout using SEO. But in order to test it out, follow the next steps:
- Think about the basic product or service of your business. If, for example, the business were not yours, what keyword or phrase would you type in the search engine to find it?
- Use this keyword or phrase on Google.
- Did you find your business on the first pages of results? If not here’s a new product just for you!
